On money, power and free society

Nick Halaris is an entrepreneur, investor, and writer who explores money, power, citizenship, and the pursuit of a good life in a free society.

After a brief stint as a lawyer and strategy consultant, Nick began his entrepreneurial career investing in foreclosed homes in the aftermath of the Great Financial Recession. What began with a single house quickly grew into a $100 million real estate business. Before long, he was leading more than 100 employees and owning and operating 2,500 multifamily units across the country.

But rapid success came with real costs. A series of mistakes, misjudgments, and moral failures led to years of investigations, lawsuits, and partnership disputes. In the pressure of that prolonged crisis, Nick came to see success differently. What emerged was a more demanding and more meaningful philosophy: one grounded not only in achievement, but in responsibility, integrity, and the disciplined pursuit of wealth without compromise.

That vision now animates Political Animal, which confronts money, power, and influence—and mobilizes citizens to help reshape democratic life in America. Each week, thousands of readers and listeners turn to Nick for insight on money, power, and the obligations of life in a free society. He is known for challenging conventional ideas about success and for making the case that business, rightly understood, can be a force for moral seriousness and civic renewal.

Over the last 20 years, Nick has founded and led several successful real estate investment and development companies and has invested in more than $300 million of property. He is currently the President of the Westward Group, a vertically integrated real estate company focused on providing housing solutions to renters and homeowners.

Nick lives in West Hollywood with his wife and children. He loves fitness, books, and teaching kids jiu jitsu.
